In music this half term year 1 have been learning all about pitch. Pitch is a musical word which means how high or low a sound is. Today we listened to different pieces of music and tried to identify whether the pitch was going up or down. We then combined actions with the music which related to the pitch, for example if the music was going up our movement went upwards.

We have been practicing writing in sentences. Last week and today we have had different pictures to write a story or series of sentences about. I have been very impressed with everyone’s writing.
We are trying to remember these things with our writing: capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, phonics to sound out words, correct letter formation and writing on the line.

Today we introduced the words ‘urban’ and ‘rural.’ We looked at different photos from around the UK and spoke about whether they were urban or rural areas. We then discussed Gurnard and Cowes and decided they have a mix of rural or urban features.

We had a fantastic day for Elf Day! We did lots of elf and Christmassy arts and crafts in the morning. We then had a special visit to Lapland in the hall where we got to see Father Christmas! All the children got a tree decoration as a present and they did those when they came back to the classroom.

We were very lucky today to watch a live streaming of Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime. The children enjoyed the warm up where we did some songs and actions and they enjoyed watching the show and joining in with the shouting and clapping!

LO: To know how weather affects different jobs.
Today we talked about different types of weather and how they will affect different people’s jobs. The children had some amazing ideas and realised that windy conditions will stop a fisherman working and an ice cream seller will not sell much if it is cold and raining. They discovered that a teacher will be able to work in most weathers and the school will only close if there is a lot of thick snow. We then all talked about how we would love a snow day!

We had great fun this morning making Christmas hats ready for our Christmas dinner today. We decorated our crowns and added lots of sequin and glitter! We had the Christmas tunes playing and some dancing too!

Today in Maths we started to look at 3D shapes. We looked at the different 3D shapes and their names. We then had baskets of shapes that we had to sort and name. The shapes we looked at today included spheres, cubes, cuboids, pyramids, cones and cylinders.
