Maths – I can be introduced to weight and mass.

Monday 28th February 2022

Today we started to look at weight. We thought about which objects in the classroom are heavy and which are light. We then used the bucket scales to compare objects and see which are lighter and which are heavier. We used stem sentences to say “The stone is heavier than the bear.” “The stick is lighter than the pot.”

Maths – I can use a ruler.

Wednesday 16th February 2022

Today we continued our measuring and learnt how to use a ruler. We made sure our objects always started on the zero and then looked along to see how long they were. We measured lots of different objects in our classroom and even learnt that each number on the ruler is a centimetre. We learnt that we can write centimetre as cm.

English – I can follow instructions.

Tuesday 15th February 2022

This week we are looking at instructions. We gave each other instructions to draw a monster on our whiteboards. We quickly realised that if we want our pictures to look the same, our instructions have to be clear and detailed. We then looked at some instructions for how to wash our hands and put them into the correct order.

Safer Internet Day

Tuesday 8th February 2022

Today we did some work on Safer Internet Day. We talked about games we play online and how we play them. We spoke about how we should behave towards others when we are playing games online. We then discussed which information is safe to share online and that we should keep personal information private and not share it.

Monday 8th February 2022

Today we were very lucky to take part in an African drumming workshop with Andy Warn. The children got to play with all the different instruments and we played lots of different rhythms.

English – Handwriting

Thursday 27th January 2022

Today we focussed on handwriting in our English lesson and looked at correct letter formation. We just looked at the curly letters today and tried to make sure our letters were sitting on the line and tall letters went up high and low letters below the line.

Phonics – Dictation & Tricky Words

Thursday 27th January 2022

Today in Phonics we revised all of our sounds we have learnt so far. I then gave the children a sentence to write on their whiteboards. I was very impressed with everyone’s sounding out and how well they could segment the words.

We then looked through all the tricky words we have learnt so far. We played a game of ‘Tricky Words Discos.’ All around the classroom were lots of tricky words. When the music played d to dance. When the music stopped I called out a tricky word and the children had to find them and go and stand by it. We had great fun!

English Hook – Making Porridge

Tuesday 18th January 2022

This week we are starting our new text in English, ‘The Magic Porridge Pot.’ For our hook lesson we learnt how to make porridge and then ate it. Everyone followed the instructions really carefully and we all had a go at stirring it until it became thick and creamy. Nearly all of the children liked the porridge and said it was yummy and sweet.

PCSO Steve Anker Visit

Wednesday 12th January 2022

Today PCSO Steve Anker visited the children in Year 1. He spoke to us about what he does and showed us his radio and body cam. Steve then spoke to us about what to do if we ever got lost. He said there are some safe strangers like police officers and teachers that we can go to and we can go to shops or doctors surgeries to ask for help. We spoke about how it is important to stay with our parents and guardians when we are out and about so we can keep safe.
