Forest School

Thursday 9th December 2021

We had great fun at Forest School this afternoon! We all wrapped up warm and put our wellies on. The children loved exploring all the new resources and dens in the forest area. We then came back to class to have hot chocolate in the warm.

Young Governors – Food bank Appeal

Thursday 9th December 2021

Today the young governors visited our class to tell us about their latest fundraising project. The young governors have decided to support the food bank this Christmas.

Children are being asked to bring in a donation of food and in return they can wear Christmas mufti on our Elf Day on Monday 20th December. Food items can be brought in before then and children will be able to put them in the mini wooden sleigh that the young governors have built.

This month the food bank are asking for donations of long life milk, long life juice, custard, sponge puddings and coffee.

Art – Weaving Christmas Stars

Tuesday 7th December 2021

This week we have used our weaving skills that we have learnt over the last term to create a Christmas tree decoration. We used lolly sticks to make a star and then used different coloured threads to weave around the sticks, going over and under as we went round. The children had to cut different lengths of thread and then fasten them at the back either by tying or sticking sellotape.

The finished decorations look amazing and the children will be bringing them home next week!

Christmas is coming!

Wednesday 1st December

We were very excited this morning to discover that the classroom has been turned into a Winter Wonderland! All the children’s paper chains have been hung, the Christmas tree put up and fairy lights everywhere! The writing area has been turned into a Christmas post office with a Father Christmas post box. It has been such a busy area of the classroom all day! The children have thoroughly enjoyed making cards for each other and for family members and writing letters to Father Christmas!

Wake Up Shake Up

In Aquila class we love our wake up shake up sessions. We like to do a range of different exercises including dance workouts, stretches and some that focus on breathing and balance. These sessions help us to become focussed.

Maths – Finding the difference

Tuesday 30th November

Today we have been finding the difference. We worked with a partner to make towers of cubes and then had to find out who had more. We then worked out the difference between the two towers.

Maths – Subtraction

Thursday 25th November 2021

This week we have started to look at subtraction. We have been using objects and physically taking some away. The children pretended to be magicians and used a wand (and Harry Potter glasses) to start with 10 monsters. They then did a spell to make some disappear and worked out how many they left. We used the stem sentences “First I had 10 monsters. Then 4 disappeared. Now there are 6 left.”

We then moved on to use our part whole models and to use subtraction to help us find the missing part.

We have also been focusing on correct number formation this week and our funky fingers challenges was putting pegs onto the correct flowers and then writing the number correctly – no cheeky reversed numbers!

English – The Bear and the Hare

Tuesday 23rd November

This week we have started our new unit in English. We are looking at the story ‘The Bear and the Hare.’ We watched the video (John Lewis advert) and then discussed what was happening in the story.

We had a lovely discussion about why Bear normally misses Christmas and we realised it was because he has to hibernate. We then spoke about why Hare wanted Bear there for Christmas and what he did. The children spoke about the character’s feelings and understood that the Hare was sad and lonely. They thought the Bear was excited, happy and shocked when he joined his friends for Christmas.

We then drew story plans to show the order of the main events in the story.

Art – To weave with paper.

Monday 22nd November 2021

Today we tried weaving with paper. All children could attach the paper by threading over and and under. We tried really hard to alternate how each row started as well.

Cup & Ball Challenge

Monday 22nd November 2021

History – To learn about old toys.

Art – To follow instructions to make an old toy.

The art challenge has been very popular today! The children loved making their own cup and ball toy and then playing with it.
